The People's Museum

  •

Through this poster presented by Jose Manuel López Blay at the First Congress on History and Heritage in Viver, we remember a cultural milestone that marked our history.

The Museo del Pueblo, a travelling museum created during the Second Republic, was a pioneering initiative of the Misiones Pedagógicas (Educational Missions) and the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Free Institution of Education). Opened on 29 May 1931, its aim was to bring art and culture to all corners of Spain, even to those places where access to museums was unthinkable.

Through copies of works by great masters of painting, the People's Museum sought to make people aware that cultural heritage also belonged to them. This project was part of an ambitious educational reform plan that included the construction of schools and the improvement of teacher training.

In the spring of 1936, the People's Museum visited the Segorbe-Viver educational district, bringing with it a piece of history and art to our region.

In 2026, it will be 90 years since that visit, and we want to remember this extraordinary event that left its mark on our land.
