Santa Bárbara & Los Huertos
C. Sta. Bárbara Viver CS
After the Christian conquest of the Islamic territory by the monarch James I, an incipient urban area was consolidated in the upper part of the present town.
Strategically located, it took advantage of the abundant water springs and dominated the cornice of the Hurón river gorge in the area of La Floresta, as well as the natural passage between the interior and the coast. Initially, a small group of grouped houses must have been built, enclosed within themselves, with narrow, steep and winding streets, some of which were dead ends and with gates leading to the interior.
A few metres away, the Huertos gateway and its surroundings remind us of the characteristic medieval town planning, which prioritised its organic growth and its defensive character so typical of the times of swords and spears.
